I lived most of my adult life along the coast of Virginia and fell in love with mild and plump James River oysters. The restaurants on this list definitely do oysters right, though there are other good ones in town. In no particular order, here are five good restaurants in Savannah that will successfully satisfy your craving for oysters:
Sorry Charlie’s Oyster Bar. Sorry Charlie’s is a favorite of tourists as well as locals who go for its happy-hour specials. Located on West Congress Street, near City Market, it offers oyster bar seating.
Common Restaurant. Common (118 E. Broughton) sells James River oysters for as little as 50 cents each during happy hour. It also imports oysters from Maine and Prince Edward Island, Canada, for those who like saltier oysters.
Brochu’s Family Tradition. Brochu’s oysters aren’t inexpensive, but they are delicious. The restaurant prepares its oysters raw, steamed, grilled and roasted, and serves them with bacon and green peppers, Caribbean spiced jam or chilis and bacon. Located in the city’s trendy Starland District, Brochu’s has a Bull Street address, but enter from East 40th Street.
Fiddlers Crab House & Oyster Bar. Because of its location on River Street, this restaurant attracts a lot of tourists. It offers Oysters Savannah (garlic butter and parmesan cheese), Oysters Rockefeller (spinach dip, bacon and parmesan cheese) and Oysters on the Half Shell (lemon, horseradish and cocktail sauce).
Erica Davis Lowcountry. This restaurant lists as one of its favorites Oysters Rockefeller, prepared with collards and cream and parmesan cheese. Of the restaurants on this list, it serves a larger percentage of locals because of its location at 3209 E. Victory Drive, about five miles from the downtown historic district.
