There was a time — not many years ago — when it wasn’t easy to find good sushi in Savannah. Some sushi aficionados would say it was impossible back in the day. These days many local restaurants serve good to excellent sushi. These are my favorites:
The Vault Kitchen and Market The Vault, which operates in what for more than 50 years was a Bank of America branch office, serves Asian fusion cuisine, including nine traditional and seven house rolls. Among the house rolls, “The Vault” includes snapper, tuna, salmon, crab, asparagus, tobiko, white tuna, eel sauce, and “The Bank” includes baked eel, tempura shrimp, asparagus, avocado, chipotle, eel sauce. 2112 Bull Street
Ukiyo One block south of The Vault is Ukiyo, a relatively new Japanese restaurant that is usually packed, but you don’t need reservations to sit at the sushi bar. Ukiyo serves salmon, spicy tuna and vegetarian hand rolls, which are taco-shaped sushi rolls, four classic rolls, and black dragon executive rolls, which come with shrimp tempura, unagi, avocado, cream cheese, kabayaki and masago. 2224 Bull Street
Sushi-Thai The restaurant bills itself “where East truly meets East.” That’s Japan and Thailand. It pulls off being a Japanese and a Thai restaurant by offering multiple selections of both cuisines, including arguably the area’s largest selection of sushi rolls. The Japanese side of the menu alone includes four medium rolls and 23 large rolls. Just to name two, the Crazy Roll includes salmon skin, eel, avocado with masago and sesame seeds, and the Beauty and the Beast Roll is half tuna, half eel, avocado and masago and sesame seeds. I assume tuna is the beauty and eel is the beast. 317 W. Broughton Street
Super Tastes This might be an odd name for a Japanese restaurant, but it uses fresh ingredients, and like Sushi-Thai, it offers a multitude of sushi choices. To be more precise, nine sushi appetizers, 11 sushi entrees and 16 raw and cooked classic rolls, such as octopus, mackerel, tofu skin and white tuna. 119 Charlotte Road Suite H
